resident faust, members of the harvard corporation and the board of overseers, members of the faculty, proud parents, and, above all, graduates,

the first thing i would like to say is 'thank you.' not only has harvard given me an extraordinary honor, but the weeks of fear and nausea i've experienced at the thought of giving this ***mencement address have made me lose weight. a win-win situation!

now all i have to do is take deep breaths, squint at the red banners and fool myself into believing i am at the world's best-educated harry potter convention.

delivering a ***mencement address is a great responsibility; or so i thought until i cast my mind back to my own graduation. the ***mencement speaker that day was the distinguished british philosopher baroness mary warnock. reflecting on her speech has helped me enormously in writing this one, because it turns out that i can't remember a single word she said.

this liberating discovery enables me to proceed without any fear that i might inadvertently influence you to abandon promising careers in business, law or politics for the giddy delights of be***ing a gay wizard.

you see? if all you remember in years to ***e is the 'gay wizard' joke, i've still ***e out ahead of baroness mary warnock. achievable goals:

the first step towards personal improvement.

actually, i have wracked my mind and heart for what i ought to say to you today. i have asked myself what i wish i had known at my own graduation, and what important lessons i have learned in the 21 years that has expired between that day and this.

i have ***e up with two answers. on this wonderful day when we are gathered together to celebrate your academic success, i have decided to talk to you about the benefits of failure. and as you stand on the threshold of what is sometimes called 'real life', i want to extol the crucial importance of imagination.

these might seem quixotic or paradoxical choices, but please bear with me.

looking back at the 21-year-old that i was at graduation, is a slightly un***fortable experience for the 42-year-old that she has be***e. half my lifetime ago, i was striking an uneasy balance between the ambition i had for myself, and what those closest to me expected of me.

i was convinced that the only thing i wanted to do, ever, was to write novels. however, my parents, both of whom came from impoverished backgrounds and neither of whom had been to college, took the view that my overactive imagination was an amusing personal quirk that could never pay a mortgage, or secure a pension.

they had hoped that i would take a vocational degree; i wanted to study english literature. a ***promise was reached that in retrospect satisfied nobody, and i went up to study modern languages. hardly had my parents' car rounded the corner at the end of the road than i ditched german and scuttled off down the classics corridor.

i cannot remember telling my parents that i was studying classics; they might well have found out for the first time on graduation day. of all subjects on this pla***, i think they would have been hard put to name one less useful than greek mythology when it came to securing the keys to an executive bathroom.

i would like to make it clear, in parenthesis, that i do not blame my parents for their point of view. there is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you. what is more, i cannot criticise my parents for hoping that i would never experience poverty.

they had been poor themselves, and i have since been poor, and i quite agree with them that it is not an ennobling experience. poverty entails fear, and stress, and sometimes depression; it means a thousand petty humiliations and hardships. climbing out of poverty by your own efforts, that is indeed something on which to pride yourself, but poverty itself is romanticised only by fools.

Sheryl Sandberg told a graduating class of Tsinghua University that great leaders want genuine enthusiasm, something she said her late husband, Dave Goldberg, always had.

No one won more hearts than my beloved husband Dave… He raised the performance of everyone around him, she said during a commencement speech on Saturday in Beijing. He did it as CEO of SurveyMonkey, a great company he helped build, and he did it for me and our children.

Goldberg and Sandberg, 45, were at a private resort in Punta Mita, Mexico, with their family when he fell off a treadmill and died from severe head trauma on May 1. He was just 47.

This is believed to be Sandbergs first time publicly speaking about her husband since hisuntimely death.

itake with me the memory of friday afternoon acm happy hours, known not for kegs of beer, but rather bowls of rainbow sherbet punch. over the several years that i attended these happy hours they enjoyed varying degrees of popularity, often proportional to the quality and quantity of the accompanying refreshments - but there was always the rainbow sherbert punch.

i take with me memories of purple parking permits, the west campus shuttle, checking my pendaflex, over-due library books, trying to print from cec, lunches on delmar, friends who slept in their offices, miniature golf in lopata hall, the greenway talk, division iii basketball, and trying to convince dean russel that yet another engineering school rule should be changed.

finally, i would like to conclude, not with a memory, but with some advice. what would a graduation speech be without a little advice, right? anyway, this advice comes in the form of a verse delivered to the 1977 graduating class of lake forest college by theodore seuss geisel, better known to the world as dr. seuss - here's how it goes:

my uncle ordered popovers from the restaurant's bill of fare. and when they were served, he regarded them with a penetrating stare . . . then he spoke great words of wisdom as he sat there on that chair: "to eat these things," said my uncle, "you must excercise great care. you may swallow down what's solid . . . but . . . you must spit out the air!"

and . . . as you partake of the world's bill of fare, that's darned good advice to follow. do a lot of spitting out the hot air. and be careful what you swallow.

you all are leaving your alma mater now. i have no gift to present you all except a piece of advice.

what i would like to advise is that "don’t give up your study." most of the courses you have taken are partly for your certificate. you had no choice but to take them. from now on, you may study on your own. i would advise you to work hard at some special field when you are still young and vigorous. your youth will be gone that will never come back to you again. when you are old, and when your energy are getting poorer, you will not be able to as you wish to. even though you have to study in order to make a living, studies will never live up to you. making a living without studying, you will be shifted out in three or five years. at this time when you hope to make it up, you will say it is too late. perhaps you will say, "after graduation and going into the society, we will meet with an urgent problem, that is, to make a living. for this we have no time to study. even though we hope to study, we have no library nor labs, how can we study further?"

i would like to say that all those who wait to have a library will not study further even though they have one and all these who wait to have a lab will not do experiments even though they have one. when you have a firm resolution and determination to solve a problem, you will naturally economize on food and clothing.

as for time, i should say it’s not a problem. you may know that every day he could do only an hour work, not much more than that because darwin was ill for all his life. you must have read his achievements. every day you spend an hour in reading 10 useful pages, then you will read more than 3650 pages every year. in 30 years you will have read 110,000 pages.

my fellow students, reading 110,000 pages will make you a scholar. but it will take you an hour to read three kinds of small-sized newspapers and it will take you an hour and a half to play four rounds of mahjian pieces. reading small-sized newspapers or playing mahjian pieces, or working hard to be a scholar? it’s up to you all.

henrik ibsen said, "it is your greatest duty to make yourself out."

studying is then as tool as casting. giving up studying will destroy yourself.

i have to say goodbye to you all. your alma mater will open her eyes to see what you will be in 10 years. goodbye!

” we also need the knowledge and problem-solving skills we learn to cure diseases like cancer and ebola. it’s our responsibility.

jason: we will get strength and power through learning. the greater power means the greater responsibilities.

we should help people who are struggling in poverty and homelessness. it’s our responsibility.

lisa: let us be courageous to take our responsibilities. “there is no excuse that says:

“that’s just how things are done there.” we should be the last people to accept it, and the first to change it.” yes, we can change the world through knowledge-learning, through hard-working and through our great efforts.
